A bettor earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the event.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the president had been seized.

A single trader, which joined the platform in December and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436K from a starting bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However the odds had increased to eleven percent by late Friday night and surged in the first hours of the next day, indicating a sharp shift in market sentiment immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on non-public details," said a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other individuals also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Elected officials are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week would prevent government employees from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a market.

Market Background

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the past few years, with participants able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to political events.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. But it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting arena.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
